Overview

Carriageworks was built between 1880 and 1889 as part of the Eveleigh Railway Workshops. The precinct has significant importance in the history of Sydney and employed thousands of workers throughout its operation.

In 2007, the site was redeveloped as a cultural precinct. Today, Carriageworks is the most significant multi-arts centre in Australia. With so many events and public gatherings held there, there was need for an upgrade of the fire services to ensure the building exceeded Australian Standards. Working with Create NSW, TPS engaged consultants, engineers, and a principal contractor to ensure the works were delivered as per the brief.

Challenges

As the building could not be closed whilst the works were being conducted, a detailed staged refurbishment programme had to be prepared to cater for events and industry functions. Meticulous planning and in-depth communication between TPS, the client and all relevant stakeholders ensured that the project team were informed and could adjust the work schedule accordingly.

Services

TPS was initially engaged to assist Create NSW to develop the scope of works including design documentation in order to competitively tender the works. TPS was involved with the preparation of the tender documentation and contract (MW21) for the principal contractor, providing contract administration and principal’s authorised person services through to the handover and closing out of the project.

Highlights

Working in a building that has such significant cultural and historical significance to Sydney was a privilege. Understanding the requirements of the tenants and adjusting work schedules to ensure the contractors did not impact events or functions was challenging and rewarding. The works were performed without the tenant knowing the contractors were on-site.
